Community events continue through our autumnal foggy mornings and crisp days. Chamber music, hip hop and ballet dance classes, and wooden boat festivals along with gala benefits highlight the fall season. Check back often as more dates are added!

FALL 2006 EVENTS

September 28, Friends of the Orcas Island Library Annual Meeting Rosario Resort Music Room, 8 pm. The meeting portion will consist of general announcements and celebrations of success for the past year, including official figures from last month's 50th annual Library Fair! The entertainment portion of the meeting will feature Tom Welch, local author and historian. His new book, entitled simply "Orcas Island," is a short narrative and photographic history of our beautiful island. It is part of the "Images of America" series. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy this free talk and have some dessert!

September 29 Orcas Historical Society Museum Closing House Celebration. Last chance to view summer exhibits! Music, cider pressing, food and festivities. For more information, call 376-4849.

October 9, Orcas Island Yachts Club Mates Lunch 11:30 am - 1:30 pm. On the second Monday of every month -- except May, June, July, August, and December -- the ladies of the Club and their guests have an informal get-together in the homes of various members. October 9, Lilia! at Orcas Grange, 7:30 pm. Libby Skala, the granddaughter of stage and film star Lilia Skala, will perform the play Lilia! which she wrote. For those too young to remember, Lilia Skala immigrated from Austria in 1939, and worked her way to an Oscar nomination for her role in Lilies of the Field. Libby captures her grandmother's fascinating life in this one-woman show that records the journey of a remarkable woman and the connection between two kindred spirits. The show was selected as "Best Show" out of 118 shows performed at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. October 13, 14 Lingo Dance Theater “One of the NW’s premier contemporary performance ensembles. Adventurous and athletic works of dance theater. An intense performance of physicality that will challenge your ideas of dance, theater, gender, and identity.” Company members will teach a series of workshops. October 21 “OFF LIMITS” IMPROV coming to the Grange 7:30 pm Orcas Grange. Louise Carnachan and several friends from the Improv group “OFF LIMITS” an evening of Improvisation. Performing along with Louise are: Guy Nelson, Thomas Beebe, Alex Tilles, Abel Hewitt and a surprise guest. Using suggestions from the audience, OFF LIMITS takes off down twisted paths in improvised scenes and music. Sort of like "Who's Line Is It, Anyway", but better. There will be one performance only at 7:30 pm on Saturday, October 21st. Tickets are $10 at the door or guaranteed seating tickets can be purchased at The Darville Gallery for $11. October 27-28, November 3-4, 10-11 “Fuddy Meers” 7:30 pm at Orcas Center. Fuddy Meers revolves around an amnesiac, Claire, who wakes up every morning as a blank slate, on which her family must imprint the facts of her life. On this particular day, the shenanigans begin with Claire being abducted by a limping man who claims to be her brother trying to save her from her evil husband. They drive to the home of her mother, who has had a stroke that left her aphasic (her attempt to say funny mirrors provides the play's title. The ensuing mayhem is both deliriously funny and oddly touching. For more information, call Orcas Center at 360-376-2281
